A Golden Sweet Sixteen: The Story Behind the Izzy Bow

Today, I'm introducing something incredibly special. 

The Izzy Bow was created in celebration of my senior cat Izzy’s Golden Sweet 16.

Handcrafted from gold satin fabric I saved twelve years ago and layered with white floral embroidered lace, it holds a story that spans twelve years, countless memories, and one very special cat.

But to tell you about the bow, I have to tell you a story first.

For twelve years, I kept a piece of gold satin fabric tucked away in my collection.

Not because I had a plan for it. Not because I knew what it would become.

I simply wasn’t ready to let it go.

Every now and then, I would come across it while organizing supplies or searching for something else. I’d hold it for a moment, remember the dress it came from, and place it right back where it belonged.

Some fabrics are just fabric. This one never felt that way.

I always believed it was waiting for the right project.

I just didn’t know that project would take twelve years to find me.

The Dress

The fabric came from a dress I made in 2014 for a New Year’s celebration.

Back then, I spent weeks sewing the dress by hand. I bedazzled my shoes to match, painted my nails, and obsessed over every little detail.

Looking back at those photos now makes me smile.

Not because of the dress. Not because of the shoes.

But because I realized something hadn’t changed at all.

The woman in those photos is still here.

A little older. A little wiser. A little softer.

But still drawn to the same things she’s always loved.

Rich jewel tones.

Gold.

Pearls.

Lace.

Florals.

Sparkle.

And thoughtful little details that make something feel special.

Those things have followed me through every season of life and continue to find their way into everything I create today.

A Familiar Face

As I continued scrolling through old photos, I found someone else.

A four-year-old calico. Izzy.

The same cat-shaped marking on her nose.

The same sweet face.

The same look in her eyes.

I laughed because even then, she already looked like herself.

And somehow, sixteen years later, she still does. Just a little wiser! 😆

Those photos reminded me just how many chapters of life we’ve shared together.

Different homes.

Different seasons.

Different versions of me and her.

Through it all, she was there.

A constant through every chapter of my life.

The Fabric Finds Its Purpose

As Izzy’s sixteenth birthday approached, I knew I wanted to create something special.

Not just another bow.

Not just another collection.

Something worthy of the milestone.

A celebration of the cat who has been by my side through sixteen years of life.

And then I thought about the fabric.

The fabric I carefully saved all those years.

The fabric I could never bring myself to throw away.

The fabric that had been patiently waited for the right moment.

For the first time, I knew exactly what it was meant to become.

Why Gold

I’ve always thought of Izzy as golden.

Maybe it’s because she’s a calico and those beautiful golden patches are part of what make her so special to me.

Maybe it’s because gold has always represented celebration, treasured memories, and meaningful milestones in my life.

In Vietnamese culture, gold is often associated with prosperity, abundance, and good fortune. It is woven into celebrations and new beginnings.

For me, gold has always felt timeless.

Warm.

Comforting.

A little magical.

It felt like the perfect way to celebrate what I’ve come to think of as Izzy’s Golden Sweet 16.

The gold satin was paired with white floral embroidered lace, another reflection of the things I’ve always loved.

Romantic details.

Florals.

Pieces that feel like they have a story to tell.

A Meaningful Little Detail

As I was putting this story together, I noticed something that made me smile even more.

The photos were from 2014. At the time, Izzy was four years old.

Twelve years later, in 2026, she turns sixteen.

And if you know me, you know I’ve always had a soft spot for meaningful little details.

My birthday is December 4.

My favorite numbers.

Sixteen. 

I think Izzy may have just given me another favorite now.

Was it a coincidence?

Probably. 

Did I immediately get excited when I noticed it?

Absolutely.

My husband laughed and called me ]delulu. LOL

I prefer to think some things find their way into our stories exactly when they're meant to.

And sometimes, those little details make the story feel even more special.

Of course, once I noticed it, I did what any curious person would do and looked up the meaning of the number 16.

The descriptions talked about love, wisdom, growth, and transformation.

After sixteen years together, I couldn’t help but smile at that too.
